Who are you competing against?

Who are you competing against?

When people creating products think about their competitors, they often think about other products that are in the same industry or vertical. But that’s rarely the case. You are also competing against

  1. A different way of doing things
  2. Not doing this thing at all

If someone made a new email client, they would naturally look at Gmail as their competitor. But in reality, they would benefit more by looking at

  1. Other ways through which people send messages, e.g. Slack, Whatsapp, or products which have integrated messaging capabilities for better collaboration.
  2. The reasons why people would not want to send messages at all? Are people collaborating in realtime because of things like Zoom? Or has the culture around message sending changed somehow and people are not sending as many messages as they used to?
